He placed a.45-caliber pistol to his head and started to pull the trigger. As he looked into the next room, he noticed pictures of his family. It was his wife Lori's birthday. He knew what he was about to do was going to devastate her. He wondered what he could do for her, to ease the pain she was about to experience. He decided to wash her car before he took his life.
Gene "Mad Dog" Hatcher had been a world champion boxer who had been on top of the world. As a champion, he rode in limousines, fought on national television, traveled the world and boxed in exotic locations on the Italian Riviera, and London, England.

As virtually all champions do, Hatcher lost his title. The adulation of the roaring crowd, which had cheered him on throughout his career, was gone. So were the big paychecks and the notoriety. As time passed, he became just another face in the crowd. Few remembered him and his sensational knockout victory against then-world champion Johnny Bumphus.
In his eyes, Hatcher no longer felt special; depression set in and he was about to end it all with a handgun, in the utility room of his home seven miles northwest of Fort Worth, Texas. In bitter frustration Hatcher began to vigorously wash his wife's car, as he hurried to complete the task he scraped his hand on the vehicle and peeled the skin from his knuckles. In desperation he broke down and began to cry out "Lord, help me". Suddenly he thought he heard God say "All I was waiting on was for you to ask me for help". That quiet voice gave him the strength to overcome his darkest hour. It gave him the power to get up and move on with his life. Today the former champ regularly speaks to others helping them win the victory over life's devastating battles.
I first met Gene "Mad Dog" Hatcher in 1985 in San Remo, Italy while he was the junior welterweight world champion. Just like Hatcher I went through a dark valley where I also contemplated suicide. After my wife Diane passed away in 2001 I was alone and depressed. As I drove across the Skyway Bridge just south of Tampa, Florida and neared the crest, a voice said to me, "Stop the car, get out, and jump to your death". As I contemplated that thought I heard another voice which I believe was the spirit of God say "Your daughter and your grand daughter are alive and they need you". The thought that I was still needed gave me the strength to move on with my life. Someone once said, "You may not be somebody in this world, but to somebody you are the world". Are you discouraged? Do you feel like there is no hope? Somebody needs you, and somebody loves you. So don't lose hope, carry on with your life no matter how tough the battle may seem. Things can get better. Call out to God for help. Ask him to forgive you of the things you have done wrong, and give the Lord Jesus control of your life. When you do he will give you the strength to get up and carry on, even after the circumstances of life have knocked you down. When you place your life in the hand of Jesus Christ, the best is yet to come.
